Obsidian is a note-taking app built around two ideas: your notes are plain files you own, and their value lies in how they connect.
## What it does
- **Plain text, on your computer.** Every note is a Markdown file in an ordinary folder, which Obsidian calls a *vault*. Any text editor can open the files, and they’ll outlast the app.
- **Links in both directions.** Typing a note’s name in double brackets, `[[like this]]`, links to it, and every note lists the notes that link back to it. Over time the links, not the folders, become the structure.
- **As simple or elaborate as you like.** It works out of the box as a plain notebook. Templates, daily notes and a large library of community plugins are there when you want them.
## Cost
Free, for personal and work use. Syncing between devices and publishing notes as a website are optional paid services; you can also sync the vault folder yourself, through iCloud, for example.
