The **Phrygian mode** is the third of the [[modes of the major scale]]: the scale that begins on the third note of a major scale, like the white keys from E to E. Its pattern of [[half steps and whole steps]] is H–W–W–W–H–W–W.
Compared with the [[major scale]], Phrygian lowers $\hat{2}$, $\hat{3}$, $\hat{6}$, and $\hat{7}$. It differs from [[natural minor scale|natural minor]] by a single note: its $\flat\hat{2}$, a half step above the tonic.
**Example 1** below shows C Phrygian, with scale-degree numbers above and [[solfège]] syllables below (*do*, *ra*, *me*, *fa*, *sol*, *le*, *te*).
