**Binary form** is a formal type divided into two main parts, conventionally termed *reprises*. Each reprise is typically repeated: $ \text{||: A :||: B :||} $ We can describe binary forms in terms of both their *thematic* and *tonal organization*. Some also feature an additional aspect, *balanced organization*. ## Thematic organization The two basic thematic types are [[simple binary]] and [[rounded binary]]. ## Tonal organization The two basic tonal types are [[sectional binary]] and [[continuous binary]]. ## Balanced organization Binary forms in which material near the end of the first reprise in a secondary key returns near the end of the second reprise in the tonic are known as [[balanced binary]] forms.
