**Form-functional theory** was first outlined by William Caplin in his 1998 book *Classical Form: A Theory of Formal Functions for the Instrumental Music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven*. The book inaugurated what has come to be known as the new *Formenlehre*, a broad return to the study of [[musical form]] after a period of relative neglect.
